The operating system of each and every bruAPP Backup Appliance is the bruAPP/OS™. A TOLIS Group-developed, custom backup-oriented operating system derived from components of FreeBSD, Linux, and TOLIS Group-native code. This highly tuned bruAPP/OS forms the heart of the bruAPP backup appliance. "Backup oriented" is key because the bruAPP Backup Appliance performs a single function, and that is the backup and recovery of data. Unencumbered by traditional operating system overhead and complexity, bruAPP/OS delivers rock solid operating system stability to assure uninterrupted and seamless backup system operation today and into the future. The bruAPP O/S - the Heart of the bruAPP

BRU Server - the Soul of the the bruAPP

 

BRU Server is the software that comprises the "soul" of the bruAPP Backup Appliance. BRU technology has protected the data on Unix systems for over 32 years, and BRU Server represents the culmination of the knowledge and expertise gained since 1985 to reliably backup and restore Unix-core (including Mac OS X) and Windows systems

 

Backing up data is all about the ability to recover it when needed. As with all BRU-based solutions, any errors experienced by the bruAPP Backup Appliance during a restore are identified, reported, and circumvented where possible, allowing the restore to continue beyond the point of the error; conditions under which other tools simply abort the recovery.

 

Management of the bruAPP Backup Appliance itself is provided via an intuitive graphical interface, character-based interface, or from the command line.

 

The bruAPP utilizes the BRU Server Console Graphical User Interface (BRU Server Console) for all backup/scheduling/restore operations, and that management console may be installed on any number of supported systems that have network connectivity to the bruAPP Backup Appliance, thereby removing any physical access for backup/restore management.

Network Backup Across the Enterprise

 

The Agent component is installed on all machines that are to be backed up by bruAPP.

 

The bruAPP BRU Server Graphical "console component" can be installed on any number of systems to manage bruAPP's BRU Server's operation. De-duplication Done Right

 

The concept of Single Instance Backup/De-Duplication is the conservation of backup media — only one copy of a file common across systems is backed-up. The loss of a "single instance" file means that file is forever gone and is no longer available to support the restoring of a system or systems that utilize that particular file. This approach is not consistent with our philosophy to assure the restorability of each and every system's data.

 

In addition to the fallibility of the Single Instance Backup/De-Duplication concept, there are significant operational issues. The strategy still requires a complete full backup be done initially and that consumes disk capacity without a minimized-use benefit.  Prior to a subsequent backup operation beginning, a lengthy scan of each system must be performed and this process can literally take hours before the first bit is backed-up.  Data restores are also very slow because the data system must work through all of the pointers.  And finally, to write to a tape that is directly recoverable, the de-duped streams must be reconstituted to original form and no economy-of-capacity is realized.

 

bruAPP's BRU Server Server component handles de-duplication properly and quickly through properly handled incremental backup.  If it's already on a previous backup, and it hasn't changed, BRU won't back it up again until you tell it to, or perform a new full backup.

 

No Interdependencies on Data Sets etc...

 

There are no dependency constraints between full, incremental or differential archives when performing restore operations. Each BRU Server archive is a complete and separate entity from other archives.  Thus, it is not required to have the full archive on-site in order to restore from an incremental or differential backup.

 

When performing backup operations, once a full backup is completed, the full backup does not need to be on-site in order to perform incremental or differential backups.  This allows you to free up slots inside of your tape library or change hard disks for offsite storage.

Live Database Backup with the BRU Server Open File Manager

 

BRU Open File Manager (OFM) for Windows

The BRU Open File Manager (OFM) is a robust open file utility for Windows systems that gives BRU Server and bruAPP Backup Appliance the power to backup any open, locked, or in-use files, ensuring that your business will run without interruption twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. BRU OFM was designed to work in high trafficked areas that receive hundreds of thousands of requests per hour. BRU OFM is cost effective and scalable from workstation to server.

 

BRU OFM's advanced caching methods protect your backups from corruption and keep relational file integrity in tact for your mission critical data stored in databases and email servers such as MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle, Active Directory and Exchange.  This data requires batch caching to keep log files and data synchronized at backup time.  You will no longer need to have users logout of the network, close a program at backup time or have skipped files.

 

Windows-Based Client Systems

 

The BRU OFM module for Windows clients allows the BRU Server Agent to backup all open files, regardless of the application currently using them. Platforms such as Exchange, SQL Server, Filemaker, Oracle, Sybase, DB2, Active Directory, and even simple open files used in Word or Excel can be properly backed up transparent to the user and the application. Also, BRU OFM requires no additional disk space for operation. You only need a BRU OFM license for those Windows clients that require open file backup support.

BRU OFM is compatible with both Intel and AMD 64 bit processors environments, including IA64. Simply install BRU OFM onto any machine and it will auto detect which driver to install.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper V Supprt

 

BRU OFM is compatible with the Microsoft Hyper-V Support that is used on Windows Server 2008 for virtual machine support.

File System, Networked Computer and Mapped Drive Support

 

BRU OFM was designed to work in a heterogeneous computing environment, by offering support for both Windows file systems (NTFS, FAT32) and network file systems. BRU OFM will also support a networked computing environment by allowing access to open, locked and in-use files over mapped drives and networked computers. Installing BRU OFM on computer A and computer B, would allow computer A to backup exclusive, in-use and locked files residing on computer B.

 

How it Works

 

How the BRU OFM Works BRU OFM monitors the file system for any read requests that will come from BRU Server Agent. Once BRU OFM detects a backup to a locked or exclusively opened file, BRU OFM will allow access to the file. The application that has the file locked continues to store the information directly to disk as usual. Once the backup of the locked file has begun, BRU OFM will automatically cache old overwritten data to a temporary location.

 

At this point BRU Server and the application see the file differently. The application that has the file locked see's all changes that it makes to the file as it would without BRU OFM installed. On the other hand, the BRU Server see's the file as it originally would when the backup first began, without any of the new changes.  See the white paper, Windows OFM and BRU.

 

Unix-Based Client Systems (includes Mac OS X)

 

The BRU OFM is only available for Windows systems, however, on Unix systems pre and post scripts may be run before and after a backup operation to freeze the state of a database that is running when the backup is to be executed. This allows you to freeze the tables or export the database content to an intermediate, or flat file for backup. While in a frozen state, most database applications will cache any user changes and then commit them once the backup is completed and the tables are unfrozen. The pre and post scripts may be written in any programming language including sh, python, Applescript, C, and more.

How to Choose the Correct bruAPP

 

bruAPP supports all networked system environments regardless of the OS type of the systems on the network.  A bruAPP model should be chosen based on rack space available (1U or 4U of space, plus space for a tape device if adding tape, which will take from 1U to 10U of space depending on the model).  Capacity of disk stage desired (no disk stage for D2T direct backup, up to 480TB disk stage) should also be considered.  Outside of these considerations, the bruAPP models are otherwise identical.

Back up any machine on your network

 

bruAPP™'s considers any machine on your network to be just that–a machine so all you need to worry about is how many machines (bruAPP™ authorized client count) you will need to have.  bruAPP™ does not make a distinction between client/server versions of the OS or hardware type on the machine you want to back up.  Additionally, bruAPP™'s BRU Server's Agent is an extremely lightweight process.

 

Even if a user is working on the machine when BRU is running its backup, BRU will slow itself down to free system resources up so the user barely, or not at all, knows BRU is running at the time.

What is bruAPP, and why have I heard it called a "toaster"?

 

bruAPP is a first-of-its-kind appliance that delivers leadership back up, and most importantly, reliable restoration of client/server-based data without dependence on any server on the network. Every component needed to support D2D, D2T, and D2D2T backup strategies is tightly integrated within bruAPP.

 

The term toaster term aptly distills the function of bruAPP into a single word. A toaster has one function, and that is to make toast. The bruAPP appliance has one function, and that is to reliably and accurately back up and restore data; both doing their job exceptionally well.

 

 

How is bruAPP different than other backup appliances?

 

Self-sufficiency best describes the difference. Other backup appliances provide only a part of a backup capability. For example, virtual tape appliances (VTLs) require a physical system and backup software to operate. The bruAPP appliance is an entire backup server system solution that contains a backup-focused boot environment, disk stage capacity, tape technology in some models, the backup software, and licenses to back up client systems - all in a tightly integrated package.

 

Is bruAPP a Unix backup tool, a Windows backup tool, or both?

 

Both!  bruAPP is a self-contained solution whose operation is not dependent on any OS server platform supporting the network. All of the major Unix platforms are supported - including Linux and Mac OS X.

 

Because bruAPP is a totally self-contained solution, Windows systems, whether they are laptops or the largest Windows Server system, are treated simply as client systems by bruAPP and all of their filesystem attributes are properly backed-up and restored.

Does bruAPP back up client systems one at a time?

 

No, because the scenario is not efficient. The low overhead of the BRU Server software in bruAPP supports the backing-up of multiple, simultaneous data streams from client systems to achieve the highest throughput possible. And, even while doing so, client system data is not interleaved with data from another client system. That too, is a poor approach.

 

What is the benefit of using bruAPP to do D2D2T backups?

 

Backup windows are shrinking, data is growing, and the bottom-line premise of backing up is the expectation to be able to recover data from a near-line (disk stage), or off-line repository (tape) when needed. In addition to the ability to validate the accuracy of BRU backups, only BRU technology can recover from read and tape errors that can occur during a restore - even though the backup was accurately written. The BRU technology in bruAPP will always return more data than any other tool as long as the media can physically be read.

 

Can I add other applications to bruAPP?  Can bruAPP be used as a NAS itself, or backup a NAS system?

 

No, bruAPP is designed to perform one function, and that is the accurate backing up and restoring of data.

 

bruAPP is not a NAS system, each system serves a different purpose. A NAS appliance serves as a data repository and bruAPP is a totally self-contained backup server system. The disk stage capacity implemented within bruAPP is integral to the reduction of the overall backup window while providing near immediate access to backed-up data.

 

To backup a NAS, mount the NAS box to a client system and bruAPP will back up the NAS data as a volume.

 

Is the software in bruAPP different from the BRU Server product?

 

No, the software is identical.

Should I use bruAPP, or just the BRU Server software?

 

It depends. The same BRU Server software is implemented in both. The primary purpose of bruAPP is to enable smaller organizations to easily protect their data by eliminating the configuring, installation, and compatibility issues that normally arise - especially when system administration resources and/or time is scarce.

 

When an organization has the expertise and supporting hardware infrastructure (i.e. disk staging/tape) in place, BRU Server software may be all that is needed. Even in this environment, bruAPP can be appropriate because its operation is insulated from the effects of patches or software upgrades applied to the network.

 

In larger organizations, bruAPP can be used to back up local or remote departments, and then serve as an agent system to push its data up to a central repository.

 

How is bruAPP disk staging different from other tools?  What if I need more disk stage?  Can the disk stage be RAID configured?

 

bruAPP writes a fully verifiable backup to the disk stage. Other tools simply write an "image" to the disk stage. When using other tools, the image written to the disk stage must first be restored before the target file can be accessed. Using BRU, the target file can be restored directly from the disk stage to the client system, or re-directed to another system. And, unlike other tools, when the contents of the bruAPP disk stage are up-staged to tape, a target file can be accessed and restored directly from tape as well.

 

Because the data written to the bruAPP disk stage is a fully verifiable backup, it can be validated for 100% accuracy in an out-of-band process that does not require continued access to the original data on the client system for comparison. Increasing the size of the disk stage is as simple as adding another hard disk drive. TOLIS Group-supplied drive modules preserve the warranty. As higher capacity drives become available, and are certified by TOLIS Group, they can replace the existing drives.

 

The bruAPP disk stage default is RAID 0 in 1U models. Other levels such as RAID 5 or RAID 6 can be configured on 3U and 4U models although they reduce the disk stage's available capacity (each 3U and 4U model description lists capacity at RAID 0, 5 and 6).  3U and 4U models have hot-swappable drives in the RAID 45 and RAID 6 configurations.

 

What operating system does bruAPP use?

 

bruAPP/OS brings up the bruAPP appliance. It is backup focused, and is more of an operating environment to boot the BRU Server software versus a full operating system with the associated trappings. bruAPP/OS is comprised of portions of Linux, FreeBSD, and TOLIS Group code that support the delivery of leadership data backup and restore services.

 

How is bruAPP installed?

 

bruAPP can be installed in as little as 10 minutes. Simply plug a temporary keyboard and monitor into bruAPP (mouse not needed), supply power to the unit, and attach bruAPP to the network (dual gigabit Ethernet ports are provided). Five simple screens then guide you through inputting of the date, time, network settings, your password, and the initiation of a hardware scan. Following the hardware scan, bruAPP is installed.

 

Note: The hardware scan can take up to 5 minutes per tape drive when an externally attached tape library is implemented.

 

How is the agent software loaded onto the client systems?  Does it differentiate between Desktop and Server OSes?

 

Following installation of the bruAPP appliance, a Web browser is opened and the appropriate platform agent is selected and directed toward the client system.

 

The bruAPP appliance treats all systems on the network simply as nodes or seats regardless of what OS type they are running.

 

How do I manage bruAPP?

 

The bruAPP console can be installed on a variety of systems and can be installed on local or remote multiple systems to best advantage. Console operation from Linux, Windows and Mac systems is standard ti the bruAPP.

 

How fast is bruAPP?

 

The BRU Server software is highly efficient and can accept data as fast as the filesystem can deliver it. No performance latency is incurred at the application level.

 

Following the first full backup of client systems, users may not even know the subsequent incremental backups of their systems is occurring. The bruAPP appliance's high throughput, coupled with leadership disk staging performance and the ability to verify a backup for accuracy (on disk or tape) in an out-of-band process delivers the backup industry's fastest, fully data verified, backup window.

 

Does bruAPP back up everything? And does it back up duplicate files?

 

It can back everything up, including Unix permissions and Windows registries, but you might not want to back up everything all of the time. bruAPP supports many different backup schedule types such as: full, differential, incremental, grandfather, father, son, etc. Complete directories can be backed-up or selected portions, and files can be excluded by type, such as MP3 music files.

 

Yes it does backup duplicate files, and for good reason. Exactly similar files will reside on systems across the network, and these files are typically critical to a system's operation. If only one copy of a particular file is kept and a damaged system must be rebuilt, the necessary file or files must be sourced from potentially multiple archives. Misplace an archive containing the only copy of a required file and timely system recovery becomes a challenge.

 

What impact will bruAPP have on my network?

 

Absolutely none. Unlike other backup tools that can bring down a network server during a backup process, bruAPP is its own backup server and incurs zero impact on network servers. The only interaction between bruAPP and any network server occurs when bruAPP is backing up that system.

 

How many clients can bruAPP have attached?

 

The number of client systems that can be backed-up by bruAPP, while retaining acceptable performance, is limited only by the available network bandwidth. While each network's characteristics are different, the following guidelines should be helpful: 10baseT = 25 clients, 100baseT = 250 clients, 1000baseT (Gigabit Ethernet) = 1000 clients

 

How secure is bruAPP?

 

The bruAPP appliance is exceptionally secure. A Diffy-Hellman handshake is employed to assure authorized communication between bruAPP and the authorized client systems. An AES 256-bit algorithm is employed when encryption is enabled.

 

How do I add clients or additional Windows Open File Managers to bruAPP?

 

Depending on the bruAPP model, either 10 or 25, or 150 licenses are provided out-of-the-box. Additional single, and value-pack licenses, are available. The new license string is inputted directly into bruAPP by re-attaching the keyboard and monitor. A planned update will support inputting a new license string via the bruAPP console.

 

Additional OFMs may be added as well for Agent systems running open file databases such as SQL, Active Directory and Exchange.  For more details, see our white paper on the BRU OFM.

 

Can I have multiple bruAPPs on my network?

 

Yes. When network response time is critical and even the fast bruAPP backups become invasive, additional bruAPP units can be implemented to minimize the impact of the backup process. The administrator need only define which client systems will be backed-up by which bruAPP.

 

How can I test a bruAPP?

 

The bruAPP hardware component is comprised of high quality standard components, and the software is BRU Server. bruAPP can be tested for suitability to meet your business needs by downloading the BRU Server demo, a full functionality 30-day trial. At day 31 following installation, the demo will no longer back up data, but any archives created will always be able to be restored.
